Apprentice Book
Reflect, Your Choice:
I selected the story “Good with Boys” by Kristen Iskandrian because I loved the way it captured the childhood obsession with having a crush. Iskandrian’s way of writing the main character Jill’s inner dialogue I thoroughly enjoyed because I found it relatable to the way I was around her age. I remember being her age and having a crush was the most important thing in the world, that you would do anything just for them to notice you, and the author made that innocence of that so prominent in her story. The story told from a child’s point of view added so much to the story, it gave me such a good visual of what was going on in the story from what Jill was describing. But a big reason to why I chose this for my apprentice book was because of the ending of the story, “All of us were made to forget for a second, as wings filled the air, what was hurting” This ending to me showed a small start to a turning point in Jill’s life which I loved.

I wanted to make my apprentice book something that represented what I saw when reading the story. I started my first page with a drawing of what I saw when I read the line “I was going to sleep in a museum–with any luck, next to Esau..” I pictured a museum that seemed so big and intimidating when you were younger but as you grew up it became smaller and not intimidating. For my second page I chose the quote “We took a bus, not a yellow school bus but one of those real ones, with plush red seats and TV’S” I chose it because I had gone on a trip in 7th grade and my friends and I had gotten so excited to see a “Real” bus pull up instead of your classic yellow bus and I felt like I could just imagine it perfectly. These two pages were to capture the two beginning parts of the story of Jill knowing she is going to sleep in a museum with hope of being next to her crush, and Jill talking about how they took a real bus and Esau’s mom wouldn’t let them use the TVS. For my last page is was important to show the butterflies as that to me was a great moment in the story.
